There are more addicts in the world than ever before. There are so many more pressures in life to cope with which invariably leads to escapism and addiction in some form or other. Some people are able to deal with stress better than others and are less likely to become dependent on substances that, in the short term, alleviate the sense of helplessness associated with stress and depression but in the long term compound problems and make them worse. Addictions develop over time to the point where the addict becomes locked into a spiral of dependency. This can lead to ill health and even untimely death.
As millions become addicts a smaller number DO overcome substance abuse, becoming healthy, functioning people once more. Thousands of trained professionals help people every day to break the chains of addiction: psychologists, therapists, councellors, coaches and doctors, all working tirelessly to guide victims of addiction out of their dependency cycles and back to psychological and physical health.
I once went with a friend to an AA meeting and marvelled at the sense of solidarity I found there, that sense of togetherness in their struggle against alcohol dependency. A recovering alcoholic can visit any AA meeting in any part of the world if ever the urge to drink re-surfaces. Strangely enough there aren’t any Smokers Anonymous meetings. They say “Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic” as in, the alcoholic is in a perpetual state of remission. Smoking is the same. It is a monster addiction, one that I know and continually struggle to beat.
Although the results of alcohol addiction and the addiction to cigarettes are not quite the same, they both share the same catastrophic potential. Some people quit the habit, quickly and permanently. Some lapse and slip into bad habits after days, weeks even months and years of not smoking. Such is the addictive power of tobacco.
R.E.S.T or float therapy, combined with positive subliminal messaging can be a very effective way of beating the cigarette addiction. There are no distractions allowing the floater to be 100% receptive to auto suggestion and open to his or her own inner voice.
When you are in a float tank you are blocking out any kind of external stimulus that can distract you from your objective. Instead of receiving stimuli you start to project from inside outward, a visualization of how you want to see yourself and how you want to be in the future. From my own experiences these visualizations can be vivid and powerful.
We’re not superhuman and to beat an addiction you’ve first got to want to. For some it’s easy and for others the road is longer and more difficult. The most important thing is taking steps in the right direction in your quest to be rid of the shame, the guilt and the negativity that comes from any addiction.
For all those smokers trying to quit or are thinking about quitting why not try a float session. It’s not just about the floating it’s also about the support you’ll get from those who’ve been down that road and relate to the challenges all smokers face on their journey to health and freedom from addiction.
